This process is usually applied while painting heavy equipment, tractors etc. As the CED coating is highly chemical resistant and mechanically durable, it is widely used in the coating of the automobile parts. CED is a wet coating system that helps to deposit a layer of primer coat on pre-treated metals by dipping them inside the positively charged paint bath. The electrodes are used to apply the coating and any adhering material is washed away using the filtrate recuperated from the cathode dip coating paint and is baked to achieve curing of the paint film, thermally. Before the CED process is started, the surface is first prepared to achieve maximum coat adhesion. The surface is treated to free from dust, oil or rust and eliminate any chance of adverse paint reaction with the base metal.

This process is industrially used for applying coatings to metal fabricated products. It has been widely used to coat automobile bodies and parts, tractors and heavy equipment, electrical switch gear, appliances, metal furniture, beverage containers, fasteners, and many other industrial products.EPD processes are often applied for the fabrication of supported titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts for water purification applications, using precursor powders which can be immobilised using EPD methods onto various support materials. Thick films produced this way allow cheaper and more rapid synthesis relative to sol-gel thin-films, along with higher levels of photocatalyst surface area.
