How do I use lavender essential oil to help a baby sleep?
There are many essential oils that are available in the market today. Some are highly reactive, while some are soothing and relaxing. Lavender essential oil falls in the second category. A very soothing and a superbly relaxing essential oil, you can use it even on kids as old as 3-6 months old.
But, beware!
You must never use any essential oil, including lavender essential oil, directly on your baby’s skin.
Needless to say, when your baby is between 0-3 months old, stay away from all essential oils. Since the skin of the baby during this age is extremely thin, it directly transfers whatever that touches the baby directly into its bloodstream.
That being said, once your baby has crossed this threshold, you can apply lavender essential oil over your baby’s skin in the following three ways:
1. Mix it up with a suitable carrier oil (coconut, extra virgin olive, jojoba or almond) and gently massage your baby’s body with it. The dilution should be such that for every teaspoon of the carrier oil, there should be just 1 drop of the essential oil.
2. Give your baby a herbal bath by mixing 12-15 drops of lavender essential oil, 2 tablespoons of any carrier oil as mentioned in the previous point and 1 teaspoon of any gentle moisturizer in the bath water. Use a mild herbal soap with minimum fragrance so that the fragrance of the essential oil can stand out.
3. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil in an aroma dispenser. Switch it on and close the doors and windows 20 minutes before their bedtime. Then let them inhale it through the night. This will help them to get a good night sleep.
