Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most influential political and spiritual leaders of the 20th century, best known for leading India’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule through the principle of non-violence and peaceful resistance.
He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. After studying law in London, he worked as a lawyer in South Africa, where he first experienced racial discrimination. This experience deeply shaped his thinking and led him to develop his philosophy of Satyagraha, which means “truth-force” or non-violent resistance against injustice.
When he returned to India, Gandhi became a central figure in the Indian independence movement. Instead of using violence, he encouraged people to resist British rule through peaceful protests, boycotts, strikes, and civil disobedience. Some of his most famous movements include the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Civil Disobedience Movement, and the historic Salt March (Dandi March) in 1930, where he protested against British salt taxes.
Gandhi believed in simple living, self-discipline, truth, and equality. He worked not only for political freedom but also for social reforms, including the removal of untouchability and promoting religious harmony.
Because of his leadership and moral influence, he earned the title “Mahatma,” meaning “Great Soul.” He is often called the Father of the Nation in India.
India finally gained independence on August 15, 1947, but sadly, Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948.
Today, Gandhi is remembered worldwide as a symbol of peace, non-violence, and human rights. His ideas have inspired many global leaders, including civil rights movements in the United States and beyond.
