Thanks for your questions“How could I find a part time job as a waiter in a restaurant or a cafe in Los Angeles?” I think this questions resturent or cafe is very important for all like yours. Here I’m trying to give your answers in brief.

It’s a noble ambition and I wanted to do this too when I came here. As Anonymous mentions, it’s illegal to work off-campus without permission from the Department of Homeland Security. If the restaurant or cafe is on-campus (not unusual), you won’t need permission (although you should still look up the rules in this case). The US government looks down heavily on international students working off-campus.

By law the business needs to know your address and tax details (a Social Security number/ ITIN) in order to pay you legally. You can apply for these through the international student office at your college once you have a written letter from your prospective employer stating they’d like to hire you.

Fear not: there are often lots of good on-campus jobs for you to take on, particularly in Los Angeles. Waiters don’t make a lot more than minimum wage, however – your best bet is to try to become a research assistant in a lab (this tends to pay highly) if you’re looking for high wages.
